Our buyers rely on us to supply sugar produced responsibly. This code sets the minimum standards that TACJR Participações Ltda. (“Veracana”) requires from every mill, supplier and service provider in our supply chain. Suppliers are expected to apply the same standards to their own suppliers, including cane growers.
1. Labour and human rights
- No forced or compulsory labour. This includes debt bondage, the retention of identity documents and work in degrading conditions.
- No child labour, in line with ILO Conventions 138 and 182 and Brazilian law.
- Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected.
- Fair treatment: no discrimination, harassment or abuse.
- Wages and working hours comply with the law and collective agreements.
- Health and safety: safe working conditions, protective equipment, drinking water, shade and rest in the field, and safe transport for workers.
Suppliers listed on Brazil’s register of employers who subjected workers to conditions analogous to slavery (the “Lista Suja”), or on the CEIS/CNEP registers, are not accepted.
2. Environment
- Valid environmental licences for all operations.
- Compliance with land-use and native-vegetation law; no cane from illegally cleared areas.
- Compliance with legal requirements on pre-harvest burning of cane.
- Responsible management of water, vinasse, effluents and waste.
3. Food safety and quality
- Food-safety management certified to a recognised scheme (for example FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000) for sugar intended for food.
- A certificate of analysis for each lot, consistent with the agreed specification.
- Traceability from mill to shipment.
4. Business integrity
- Compliance with our anti-bribery and anti-money-laundering policies.
- Accurate documents. No falsified certificates, weights or analyses.
- Confidentiality of commercial information.
5. Verification
We may request documents, certificates and self-assessments. We may also carry out audits directly or through independent third parties, with reasonable notice.
6. Non-compliance
Where we find a breach, we expect a corrective action plan with deadlines. Serious breaches end the relationship immediately: forced or child labour, falsified documents, or bribery.
